Join Our Volunteer Support Team

Our Support Team is at the heart of every Veterans Day Parade. It takes many helping hands to make the parade happen! Please note the parade in 2020 is cancelled, so we are recruiting for 2021. Team check in is at 7:00 am. The parade and ceremony typically end around 12:00 pm.

We have a variety of volunteer roles to fill on Parade Day! Please read the descriptions below, and let us know what your first and second choices are. Since roles are filled on a first-come, first-served basis, you may be assigned to the team with the greatest need beyond your preference. Each individual must register below to participate on one of our teams.

Line Up Team
Assist parade participants to find their correct spot in the line up, escort them through the parade to avoid bottlenecks at the parade conclusion, assist remaining incoming participants to their correct end spot. Section Leaders help direct Line Up Team, while the Line Up Director provides instruction on which group will go next. The Line Up Registration Table is organized by 2-3 people as well.

Parking Guards
Stand guard over secured parking lots, to ensure vehicles do not park in spaces where we have assigned parade participants to park at the conclusion of their trip through the parade.

Pre-Parade Party Makers
Distribute Patriotic "Swag" to parade goers along the route before the parade starts to get the energy going!

Saturday Preparation Team
This team gathers on a Saturday prior to the parade at Ross Hollywood to create participant packets, fold programs, organize signs, and more as needed. The time frame is usually mid-day between 10am - 2pm. Date to be announced.

Set Up Team
Arriving at or before 6:00 am, assist with setting up tables, chairs, and tents to form "Dignity Row". Additionally, after the stage is set up, add finishing touches of chairs, water, and reserved seating for distinguished guests.

Clean Up Team
Assist with bringing all tables, chairs, and tents back into Ross Hollywood Chapel, additional pick up as needed.

As you can see, these tasks involve running parade logistics, therefore, we do not have open opportunities for children. We do recognize that the parade may offer an opportunity for children and teens to be involved in supporting our Veterans, so if you already have a specific project in mind and would like to be a parade participant, please register here. Parents: If you have a mature, responsible teen who wants to work in an adult role, please sign up yourself and your teen can volunteer alongside you. Thank you for your interest and understanding!

Portland’s only Veterans Day parade was established in 1974. Vernon E. Ross, proprietor of Ross Hollywood Funeral Chapel, founded the parade to honor all veterans, past and present, living and deceased. The parade would not be possible without our volunteers and generous sponsorships.
